what is to come
(better photo coming soon. promise.)
so mallory is right .. my about page is a little opaque. i currently live in london and have done for ten years. but i am about to move back to new zealand to be with the love of my life. the rockstar is charming, fearsomely intelligent and has the softest lips in the world. he is worth moving half-way round the planet for, believe me.
but i have been in london a long time, and one of my slight fears is that i will miss my adopted city very, very much. a lot has happened to me in the decade i’ve been here: i’ve travelled widely, loved immoderately, written books and taken photographs that have appeared in national newspapers. i’ve been married and separated, happy and sad. i’ve made some of the best friends anyone’s ever had. i’ve had tears come to my eyes from this city’s beauty and its cruelty. i have lived in this country nearly half my life, and it feels like home.
i worry that when i go back to new zealand, it might seem like i never left. hence this tattoo.
the word comes from a couplet written by sir thomas more. go where we may – rest where we will/eternal london haunts us still. when i look at the word on my wrist, it will remind me of ten magical, beautiful, heartbreaking years. and it will remind me of why i stayed but also why i left. that even though i love it, and even though it haunts me, i left the city behind .. because what is to come will be even better.

What is your greatest fear?
Dying on the same day as someone much more famous than me.
alan cumming is fantastic. i am dying to buy a bottle of his cologne for the rockstar ..
every day i’m hustlin
some days i make an effort:

(jacket vintage from rio, grey american apparel shirt which i wear far too often, solea shoes, cropped trousers from glassons in NZ — my friend sola described them as “hammer pants” which is better than saying i look like rupert the bear, i guess)
and some days i don’t:

(well, not much of an effort except for the shoes, which are paul smith from the sale at selfridges yyyyyeeearssss ago. you know, men really *get* these shoes. they are the only shoes i own which reliably get comments from otherwise fashion-estranged blokes. why is that?)
this week has been super mental and it’s with some delight that i have reached the weekend. yay weekend.
i plan to sort out my accounts (rock) and customise a leather jacket that i bought for 20 bucks in wellington. currently, it is a nasty, boxy shape. but it is beautiful soft leather. so i hope to recut it so that it looks a bit more rick owens and a bit less rick astley. i’ll let you know.
in other news, i’m starting to set dates and make plans for my return to NZ. it’s both exciting and terrifying.
you make the whole world wanna dance

you’ve bought yourself a second chance.
cardi m&s (whisper it not), vest uniqlo, shorts reiss, crazy-ass yellow shoes from traid in hammersmith. (and hey, i know this photo is as grainy as a grainy thing. it was early. what can i tell you.)

that flokati rug is delicious to walk on and it looks cool in a 70s-pr0n sort of way. but dear god it doesn’t half shed fluff like a monster. i imagine it’s what it’d be like to live with a very very fluffy angora rabbit. except, you know, flatter. and less carrot-demanding.
so it is a muggy summer night, i am exchanging sms messages with my boy who is freezing on a winter’s day in new zillund, and there are helicopters circling. in my little very un-punk corner of suburbia! how very dare they. i’m writing to my MP.
extremely good advice

feel the pleasures of a normal man

you know, i did ask myself if this was too much for work. but then i thought: ha, silly question.
cardigan vintage, aa t-shirt, topshop corset belt, karen walker skirt from about 12 years ago, melissa booties.
searching for satori

i’m just about surfacing from the jet lag. hence a burst of creativity: chicken soup made from scratch, finishing off another daft little film (it’s just uploading; link tk) and putting more stuff for sale on ebay. radio 4 is burbling away in the background, a soothing non-noise. it’s a grey day outside and i’m contemplating doing some writing this afternoon — blank page, scratching pen, finding my bliss.
how about you?
when the sandwiches are wicked ..
.. and they know you at the mac store ..

i went to launceston in cornwall and stayed in a b&b. for work, obv. english people, explain something to me. carpet in bathrooms. seriously, what is the deal?
things that are great:
1. maybelline mineral makeup. quite miraculous.
2. roast chicken made the quick way, boned and butterflied a la this method. YES I SUBSCRIBE TO GWYNNIE PALTROW’S NEWSLETTER THING WHAT OF IT. her recipes rock and the chicken was divoon.
3. this amazing mixtape which i found via the rather fabulous agent lover. seriously, it’s really good. it might be titled winter solstice mixtape, but it sounds pretty good in the middle of a london summer, too.
4. skype dates with my boy. i miss him so much.
5. this book, which i’m devouring at the moment. leaving aside the chavez hype, it’s an intelligent (though fiercely leftie) analysis of generations of plunder in latin america — definitely food for thought.
xoxo, jetlag girl.
